Which Famous Folk singer appears in 'Pat Garrett and Billy the kid'?

A) Brian Dylan
B) Bob Dylan
C) Burt Dylan

PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID (1973) at 9pm on Thursday 1st May

Maverick director Sam Peckinpah’s interpretation of one of the Wild West’s finest myths; that of the notorious outlaw Billy The Kid.

5 reason to watch:

  1. Peckinpah revolutionised the way that westerns were made and his preoccupation with the mythical West brought a new stylised violence to a tired genre.
  2. It’s got a great cast with Kris Kristofferson in the lead role and James Coburn as his old pal-turned-nemesis.
  3. Peckinpah uses some actors from Hollywood’s golden era of westerns like Jason Robards, Katy Jurado, Slim Pickens, Richard Jaeckel and Dub Taylor.
  4. There are some great scenes set to a Bob Dylan soundtrack showing the US countryside in all its glory.
  5. Look out for cameo appearances from Bob Dylan and Peckinpah himself.

PALE RIDER (1985)

Which commodity is causing the conflicts in ‘Pale Rider’?

A) Gold
B) Oil
C) Timber

PALE RIDER (1985) at 9pm on Thursday 8th May

Eastwood plays a mysterious preacher who rides in to town just in time to help the inhabitants fight off the advances of a greedy mine owner who wants their land.

Five reasons to watch:

  1. This is really one of the first times that Clint Eastwood’s talents as a director began to be taken seriously, reflected in the fact that he was nominated for a Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival.
  2. Eastwood reprises his famous role of a stranger or ‘man with no name’ with which he’d found initial success in Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns and again in his own film High Plains Drifter.
  3. The cinematography is stunningly beautiful featuring the fantastic landscapes and vistas of California and Idaho.
  4. The supporting characters were cast well and put in some great performances most notably those by the late Chris Penn, Michael Moriarty, Richard Dysart and Richard Kiel.
  5. Whilst this might not be the most original story – many have likened it to classic Western Shane – it is still well constructed and keeps the audience’s attention throughout with plenty of shoot outs and action.

WESTWORLD (1973)

Who plays the rogue robot in 'Westworld'?

A) Yul Brynner
B) Omar Sharif
C) Richard Burton

WESTWORLD (1973) at 9pm on Thursday 15th May

A highly original futuristic sci-fi thriller set in a robot-run theme park.

Five reasons to watch:

  1. This was feature film debut for writer and director, Michael Crichton who revealed his genius for adapting his entertaining scientific predictions for the screen.
  2. The film gives a taste of how virtual reality was envisioned in the 70s and also deals with the overriding fear of how intelligent machines might turn against humans.
  3. There’s a fantastic cast and Yul (The King and I, Magnificent Seven) Brynner puts in a great performance as a malfunctioning robot a killer instinct.
  4. Oscar-winning composer, Fred Karlin, provides a soundtrack almost as crazy as the action.
  5. There’s a brand new version of Westworld currently in production and due for release next year, so make sure you’ve seen the original 70s version!

  2. He pioneered cinematographic techniques with unique camera angles and flashbacks to create a fantastically stylish snapshot of the 60s.
  3. The story is a classic, based on Donald E Westlake’s original novel: Westlake also wrote The Outfit and adapted The Grifters earning an Oscar nomination.
  4. Lee Marvin is perfect as the heroic villain of the piece and the stunning Angie Dickinson stars alongside him.
  5. It’s a brutal thriller packed with violence, revenge and double-crossing deeds and set the standard for future filmmakers.

RISKY BUSINESS (1983) at 9pm on Thursday 29th May

A coming-of-age teenage sex comedy starring Tom Cruise and Rebecca De Mornay

Five reasons to watch:

  2. An evocative soundtrack takes you back to the 80s with tunes from Krautrockers, Tangerine Dream, a post-Genesis Phil Collins and Bruce ‘The Boss’ Springsteen.
  3. Writer and director, Paul Brickman, fashions a clever and entertaining satire about teenagers and sex resulting in an iconic 80s film.
  4. Unexpectedly for a teenage sex comedy there’s some stunningly beautiful cinematography showing America’s picturesque scenery.
  5. Rebecca de Mornay and Joe Pantoliano put in some great performances as the supporting cast.
